Ane Gabarain dresses up as Millán Astray in this work by Antonio Álamo, premièred by the Luna Hiena company.

Millán Astray, founder of the Spanish Legion, tells us his story, the tale of the Glory of Spain. On 12 October 1936, Day of the Spanish Race, that bloody Unamuno dared to wind him up. "You may win, but you will never convince," the shabby old fool said… What can you do but split your sides laughing at such stupidity?

Cantando bajo las balas is a necrophiliac cabaret, a grotesque dark comedy, a monologue in which Millán Astray, in his delirious glorification of violence and terrifying requiems that applaud the death of intelligence, speaks to the audience in the present, his discourse horribly familiar to today's theatregoers.

This work is the hall of mirrors of the Callejón del Gato in Madrid, in which contemporary society can recognise the course being mapped out for us by the upsurge of unreason, the discourse of hate and the megalomania of jingoists.
